The classic backyard boundary

Wood privacy is still the most-installed fence style we build. Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine is the workhorse: cost-effective, ages to a silver-gray, and lasts 20+ years with basic care. Western red cedar is the upgrade: naturally rot and insect resistant, holds a stain beautifully, and adds curb value.

Board-on-board vs. stockade

Stockade is the tighter, cheaper build. Board-on-board overlaps every picket for full privacy from both sides and better wind performance. We recommend board-on-board on any run over 40 feet.

What we spec on every wood install

  • 4x4 pressure-treated posts, set 36 inches deep in concrete
  • Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails
  • 2x4 rails (three on 8 ft, two on 6 ft)
  • Post caps to shed water off end grain
