Climate we build for: Freeze-thaw is the fence killer in Cincinnati. Frost line runs 32 inches, and clay soil holds water that heaves posts every winter. We auger 42 inches and use concrete on every post, no exceptions.
Local soil and dig: Heavy Ohio clay valley-wide. Slow-draining and expansive. We upsize post diameter and skirt gates with a small drainage channel where needed.

Wood privacy is still the most-installed fence style we build. Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine is the workhorse: cost-effective, ages to a silver-gray, and lasts 20+ years with basic care. Western red cedar is the upgrade: naturally rot and insect resistant, holds a stain beautifully, and adds curb value.
Board-on-board vs. stockade
Stockade is the tighter, cheaper build. Board-on-board overlaps every picket for full privacy from both sides and better wind performance. We recommend board-on-board on any run over 40 feet.

- 4x4 pressure-treated posts, set 36 inches deep in concrete
- Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails
- 2x4 rails (three on 8 ft, two on 6 ft)
- Post caps to shed water off end grain
