Wood privacy fencing

A privacy fence is the most common thing we build. Six feet is the usual height, the boards run tight or overlapped so there is nothing to see through, and the whole thing is built on site so it follows the grade of your yard instead of leaving gaps at the bottom.

Privacy styles

• Board-on-board: boards overlap so that when the wood dries and shrinks there is still no gap. The most private of the styles and the one we recommend most often.
• Shadowbox: boards alternate front and back of the rail. It looks the same from your side and your neighbor's, and air moves through it, which matters in an open or windy yard.
• Stockade: pickets butted tight together. Straightforward, economical, and full height privacy on day one.
• Dog-ear: the clipped-corner picket top most neighborhoods are used to seeing, usually six feet.
• Cap and trim: a privacy fence finished with a top cap and a trim board. It hides the picket tops and gives the run a clean architectural line.
• Lattice top: solid privacy below with open lattice above, for extra height and light without a solid wall.
• Horizontal: boards run side to side on heavier posts for a modern look.

Cedar or pressure-treated pine

Cedar resists rot and insects on its own, stays straighter, and weathers to a soft grey if you never stain it. Pressure-treated southern yellow pine costs less up front and holds stain well once it has dried through a season. We price both at the estimate so you can see the difference side by side.

How we build it

Posts set in concrete below the frost line, rails fastened to the post face, gates braced diagonally and hung on hardware heavy enough to keep them square. On a slope we either rack the fence to follow the ground or step it in sections, and we show you which one your yard calls for before we start.

Upkeep

Let it dry for three to six months, then seal or stain, and repeat every two to three years. Workmanship is covered by our written warranty.
