Planning Fence Gates for a Virginia Beach Yard
Choose gate placement and clearance before settling on the fence layout.

A fence plan needs more than a line around the yard. In Virginia Beach, the gate should work with the driveway, walkways and the equipment that regularly enters the property.
Start with everyday access
Mark the route from the house to the driveway and the route used by lawn equipment. A walk gate and a wider equipment opening may belong in different places. Measure the widest item that must pass through, including handles and attachments.
Check the swing and the ground
A gate needs room to open without hitting steps, parked cars or planting beds. Sloping ground can limit the swing. Ask the estimator to look at clearance along the full opening arc, not just beneath a closed gate.
Consider whether a latch can be reached comfortably from both sides and whether children or pets need a different latch arrangement. Pool barriers require a separate safety review.
Include gates in the estimate
Ask for gate locations, opening widths and hardware in the written scope. Check property boundaries and any applicable neighborhood requirements before the layout is final.
