Half the yards in the Roanoke Valley have a grade change worth talking about. A fence built as if the ground were flat leaves triangle gaps under every panel, which is how dogs get out and how a new fence starts looking cheap in year one. We rack panels to follow the slope, or step them deliberately when the pitch is too steep to rack, and we show you which one you are getting before we start.

Under that grade is clay, and under the clay is often rock. We carry the equipment to get through it and we quote it up front rather than discovering it on install day and asking you for more money.

Clay, rock, and freeze-thaw

Clay holds water, and water that freezes lifts posts. That is the mechanism behind most of the leaning fences you see around here after a hard winter. We set below the frost line, backfill with gravel so water drains instead of pooling against the post, and crown the concrete so runoff sheds away from the wood.

Permits across the valley

Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem, and Vinton each run their own rules, and the line between them is not always where homeowners think it is. We confirm the jurisdiction from your parcel before quoting so the permit path is right the first time.

Picking a fence for a sloped lot

  • Wood privacy racks well and is the most forgiving on an uneven line, which makes it the default choice on valley hillsides.
  • Aluminum comes in rackable panels and keeps the mountain view, which matters more here than in most markets.
  • Vinyl looks excellent on a flat or gently graded run and needs almost nothing from you, but it steps rather than racks on steep ground.
  • Chain link is the practical answer for acreage, dog runs, and rural property lines.

Local crews, written warranty

Our Roanoke crews live here and work here year round. If something needs attention after the build, you are calling the same team that put it in.

How it works

  1. 1

    Walk the line with us

We meet you at the property, walk the fence line, mark the corners, and talk through height, style, and gate placement. You get a written number before we leave or the same day.

  2. 2

    We handle permits and locates

Utility locates, permit paperwork, and HOA submittals are on us. We confirm the property line with your plat so the fence lands where it belongs.

  3. 3

    Build, inspect, and warranty

Our crew sets posts, hangs panels, and hauls off the debris. We walk the finished line with you and back the work in writing.

Common questions

Can you build a fence on a steep slope?
Yes. We rack panels to follow the grade where the pitch allows and step them where it does not. Either way we tell you which method your yard needs before you sign.
What happens if you hit rock?
We carry the equipment for it. Rock that is likely based on the site walk gets priced into the original quote, so you are not surprised on install day.
Do fences shift over the winter here?
They do when posts are set above the frost line or backfilled without drainage. We set below frost depth with gravel at the base to keep freeze-thaw from lifting the run.
Which jurisdiction issues my permit?
It depends on the parcel. Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem, and Vinton all run separate processes and we confirm yours before quoting.
